Beth Giudice, Textile Artist

"My textile work is created through my love of colour and the myriad textures, fabrics, threads and yarn available to work with.

I am excited by the fact that textile art is being taken seriously and that traditional techniques are able to be employed in a way relevant to life today. I personally love trying techniques that I have never tried before although I am often drawn back to the ones I have always loved, like knitting and crochet, hand embroidery and machine work.

My mother was a great example to me in that she had something she was working on always near at hand. I think that this is the means to take a break from our busy lives and enjoy the pleasure of creativity for its own sake."

"My work, entitled "Back to basics" is inspired by my desire to use natural fibers, textiles and dyes to produce each piece. I used simple shapes from nature. The fabric and threads are linen and silk, and for the dyes, only what I found in my kitchen, garden and surrounding parks. The stitching is as random as the results of the dye pot. The works are also a celebration of the natural and a rejection of all that is fake and not recyclable."
